I Must Confess that I Am Analagous August 16, 2013

You could say that my analogy is showing!

Either way, it is true!

What did you say?  What does that mean? or What does that have to do with anything?

Well, for me, it means a great deal.  Knowing this, I understand me better. 🙂

I mean, if you know me…if you spend more than a very few minutes of time with me…you will hear me speak in analogy format.  It is as natural for me as breathing.

In fact, I don’t even have to think about it ahead of time…

Understanding is everything to me…I mean hearing a bunch of mumbo jumbo does not help me at all.

What is an analogy you ask?  Here, I typed into my address box above “definition of analogy” and voila (French) for presto:

  1. a·nal·o·gy

    1. A comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
    2. A correspondence or partial similarity.
    similarity – resemblance – likeness – parity – parallel

Thanks Google! I appreciate the speed that I can find answers to things…In Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament in our Bible…this is the time when people are running to and fro.

As a teacher, in Middle School for 19 years, I taught children how to problem solve.  It is the most valuable skill that I believe children are taught in school. This skill is valuable in any and every subject one might take in elementary, middle or high school, and in college as well.

It is a skill needed in all walks of life.  There is a method to solving a problem…in science it is called the scientific method…and it works very much like the math skill…or life skill.

Now, I’m not focusing on the method…only on one step of the method…and that is to draw a picture…or to solve a smaller problem that you know how to do.  The purpose is to take what you know and to assimilate what you don’t know.

Oops! Now, I’m into psychology…and how the brain works…not the organ…but our mind! So amazing this work of God…the human body!!! We are beautifully and wonderfully made!

I can remember so often saying, when I got to something that I didn’t understand…and had no idea where to put it in my knowledge that was so categorized…I would say to myself, “I’m filing that for later”…or I’m shelfing that...not throwing it away…but saving for a rainy day when I had time to think…to meditate on it.

Better yet, if something came along that gave me the dot-to-dot connection, I would be able to assimilate…to categorize in my thinking…as soon as I made the connection. Immediate gratification. 🙂

Now, I know I sound like a teacher…and that’s because I am a teacher!

I ‘ve been a teacher since childhood.  I taught anyone and everyone or thing that would listen to me.  I talked a lot!  Ask anybody…I could drive anyone crazy with my chatter! Just ask my sisters…you could ask my parents but they are in Heaven…in my cloud of witnesses, cheering me on!

I came here with a question on my face…or that’s what my Daddy said.  He said I lifted my head the day I was born…and looked straight at him. Exaggeration? I’m not so sure…because I was told that story so many times…that I know he believed it to be true. 🙂

Now, back to solving the problem.  Watch a baby…as you teach them… begin with what they know…

At first, they call every man Daddy.  Why?  or woman? Mama!

They speak of what they know.  All 4-footed animals must be a dog or cat…whichever Mama or Daddy introduced them to first.

As they use all the senses available to them, they separate self from all other people…most often by taste.

They categorize, assimilating the new item into what they know.

They are solving a problem…just like I was filing for later…just like our computer works.  We file…categorize…like our brain.  So amazing, huh?

Well, you can’t teach a baby…if you begin above their head.

Neither can you teach new babes in Christ above their head.

We, like Christ, must reach them where they are

A Christian is a follower of Christ.  God is LOVE.  He’s the Way! He’s the Truth! and He’s he life!  He’s the Word and He came to this earth and dwelt among us! Emmanuel!!!

He called disciples to follow Him!  The first were fishermen…and he said, “I will make you fishers of men!”

Now, there’s that word again…analogous!  Our LORD taught in stories…comparisons…similarities, parallels.

Jesus, the Christ, was and is analogous!

In the Word, we find all those parables! Why? Because our God did not want any of us to miss it! He gave us all the picture stories, so that we would be very clear on what was good and what was not.

Example after example was about a man, woman, or child…or lawyer, or taxpayer, or merchant, governor, or king…

He used these samples, examples, analogies, clarifications…whatever you want to call them, to make sure we didn’t miss it.

I must say that I have always talked a lot! But, today, I talk a different talk!

I can’t speak without the Word coming out of my mouth…scripture…military terminology (since I’m a soldier of the cross), or analogies…sometimes the parables in the Word…but sometimes a fresh one that I receive from the throne, as I sit at my Master’s feet.

Thank You, LORD, for teaching me to enjoy being me.

Until the next time…
